Panagia Kaliviani Orphanage at a Glance
The monastery dates from the late 19th or the early 20th century as its exact date that is was founded is unknown. The tradition has it that the location where this monastery is built belonged to the property of a Turkish man. However, when a Holy Icon of the Virgin was found in this field, the Turkish administration gave this field to the Orthodox people to construct a church. This small chapel was built in 1911 and can be seen today in the yard of the Monastery. It has three aisles and each one of them is dedicated to the Birth, the Pronunciation and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Its architecture style belongs to the Byzantine era. The holy icon of the Virgin Mary can be found inside the new chapel.

The Monastery of Panagia Kaliviani is located on the island of Crete, in the mountainous regions between Rethymno and Heraklion. Situated at a distance of 5 km from Moires village, the monastery took its name from the closeby village of Kaliviani, which is why it has been named Panagia (Virgin Mary) Kaliviani.

Orphanage Repairs and Education
With our organization’s mission always in mind, we strive to find new strategies for dealing with this challenge. Panagia Kalivani is something that we take very seriously, and our team is working each and every day to make a positive impact. Having such a large area to constantly renovate and repair is costly. Your donations help relieve the financial burdens of the repairs.
Feeding the Monastery
Providing Clothing and Shoes and More
Through your donations the monastery is able to feed the orphan girls as well as all the nuns on the premises. Panagia Kalivani also has a γηροκομείο (old age home) on their grounds. Nuns run the entire monastery using your donations to provide three meals a day.
Housing girls ranging in ages from three to eighteen is difficult. Your donations and funds provide the orphanage with monetary needs to meet basic essentials for the girls. This includes but not limited to: shirts, shorts, dresses, underwear, bras, bathing suits, socks, shoes, sandals and feminine products. Your donations are also used for beds, mattresses and sheets.
